About Sports Betting in Indiana

When a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling made it legal for any state to offer sports betting, Indiana already had legislation in place to be among the first to market. And ever since Indiana accepted its first wagers in the fall of 2019, the Hoosier State has been a national pacesetter, even as neighboring states have entered the fray.

In a state known for the Indy 500 and its feverish basketball fandom, Indianans have shown a propensity to wager responsibly on a host of different sporting events. The state bears the distinction of being the professional base of WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark, who almost single-handedly spurred a surge in the amount of betting interest in women's sports.

2024 saw annual Indiana sports betting handle eclipse $5 billion for the first time, with November -- nestled in the heart of football season and at the beginning of basketball season -- attracting an all-time monthly high of $614 million in wagers.
