Here are a few horses to consider on Sunday’s card at Santa Anita. • The featured ninth race is the $100,000 Dream of Summer Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares at one mile on turf. The top contenders have many questions to answer regarding surface, distance, class, and current form, so it might be wise to take a crack at a longer-priced option. Trainer Richard Baltas saddles one-third of the entrants, and I’ll take the one who offers the highest morning-line odds. TIZ A KISS (5) (10-1 morning line) is a rock-solid turf and synthetic performer trying to transfer her ability to dirt. I have no idea how she’ll perform on this surface as her lone dirt start came sprinting back in 2012 for another barn, and she’s a totally different animal now. She will handle this distance without a problem, however, and her recent form is dirtied up by subpar efforts over “good” turf courses against better competition. I do believe she classes up very well with these horses. All this late runner needs is a little pace, and the hope is that LUCY IN DIAMONDS (2) puts enough heat on SWISSARELLA (3) to give the closers a fair break. I’ll bet Tiz a Kiss to Win at 10-1 odds or greater and will use her in multiple-race wagers with the intriguing LIGHT ONE (7) (6-1). Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Light One was in too steep over the wrong surface last time out. Although best on Tapeta, she is capable on dirt and can sit a nice trip just off the early leaders. Distance is a concern, but Hollendorfer is 3 for 8 (38 percent) with a $8.15 ROI over the past three years when moving from turf to dirt and sprint to route. The tactical MELANISTIC (4) and back classer SHEER PLEASURE (9) can be played in exactas and trifectas. • I’ll try to beat the speedy BISTRAYA (1) in the fifth race, the opening leg of the pick six. A maiden winner two starts back, Bistraya was then sent to Fair Grounds for the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes. He pressed the pace for six furlongs before retreating and is now given class relief for his return to Southern California. Bistraya’s Moss Pace Figures have him as the clear pacesetter, but I hate playing short-priced horses off poor running lines. Instead, I’ll bet OSSETRA (2) (5-2), an Ohio-bred returning from a layoff for Bob Baffert and Martin Garcia. Although the beaten favorite in his lone try against winners, an optional claimer at Los Alamitos on Dec. 6, Ossetra received a true education in that race. In and among horses throughout, he split rivals entering the long stretch to contend for the lead only to falter very late. That race wasn’t the fastest in the world, and he wasn’t facing the toughest horses, but this looks like a nice spot to make his 3-year-old debut. Here’s hoping he returns a more mature and focused colt. We’ll find out today if he deserves a chance against better runners or will soon be dangled back in for a high claiming tag. For what it’s worth, Baffert is 4 for 10 (40 percent) with a $2.38 ROI over the last two years with dirt routers returning from 61-to-180-day layoffs in optional claimers at Santa Anita. MISHEGAS (5) switches surfaces and removes blinkers. A nice-trip winner in his most recent dirt start, he is playable along with CURLIN RULES (4), a $375,000 yearling who rode an inside, speed-friendly track to victory last month. • In the finale, most will gravitate to INSUBORDINATION (3) and VOW TO BE TOPS (6), two horses who have run competitive Beyer Speed Figures on turf. Either one can certainly win, but I haven’t been blown away by their races. PAPA JOEY (1) (6-1) is the tepid pick. He finished evenly in his career debut and now switches surfaces for a trainer who can fire on turf. This pedigree is geared mostly to dirt, with names like Habibti sprinkled among the second family, but Papa Joey needn’t be a superstar to threaten for a major placing. I’ll play Papa Joey to win if he stays at his morning-line price and will use him with the two aforementioned horses in exotics. A horse like NAT’S NATION (7) deserves mention because of his turf pedigree, while SILVER SUMMER (9) might have an easier time on the lead in this spot.
