The closing-day Belmont card features the $125,000 Lynbrook Stakes for New York-bred juveniles, but there are also a few other intriguing races with good-priced contenders. Let’s take a look at a few of them: Race 1, Maiden Special Weight The Play – (2) CAHIRCIVEEN (5-1 morning line, 3-1 value line) This looks like a good spot for a first-time starter and CAHIRCIVEEN boasts the proper combination of pedigree, connections, and workouts. Although her bloodlines are more slanted to turf (by Giant’s Causeway out of Grade 3 turf winner Strike It Rich), they are also geared to distance, which should help the 3-year-old debutante handle the grueling mile trip. For those players that need surface confirmation in the pedigree, it must be noted that Strike It Rich is a half-sister to Grade 2 stakes-winning dirt router Belle of Perintown. Trainer Christophe Clement already has 11 debut winners in 2016 (22 percent, $2.63 return on investment) so he can certainly get one ready to fire at first crack. Jockey Manny Franco had a big Belmont meet and enjoyed a multi-win day on Saturday. Several of the workouts match up (same time, distance, and trainer) with Clement’s 4-year-old Arbitrator, a colt who earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure last year before going on the shelf. The indispensable DRF Clocker Report mentions that Cahirciveen ”took dirt from and held an edge over Arbitrator while in hand past the wire in (-1) 48.4 > (even) 1:01.60 / 1:15.40. RATING: B” I’ll play Cahirciveen to win at 3-1 or greater and will use in exotics with YOUNG ANNA LEE (4) and LILIKOI (3) Race 8, optional claimer The Play –  (7) STELLA ROSE (12-1 morning line, 6-1 value line)   Clement also has Stella Rose in the seventh, an entry-level optional claimer. A debut winner on dirt at Gulfstream, Stella Rose bombed in her first start against winners at Belmont last month. She pressed the pace on the outside and had nothing left in the stretch in a disappointing performance. She is switching to turf for the first time  and has some intriguing workouts on display. Her morning trials on June 26 and July 3 match up perfectly with Clement’s good turf mare Trophee (recently stakes-placed on turf at Belmont on July 10 with a 92 Beyer), and our expert clockers are raving about her most recent drill on July 10. A lightly raced filly with plenty of upside, Stella Rose has some turf pedigree. Although I am generally not a fan of the Mineshafts on turf, the dam, a half-sister to Grade 1 turf winner Citronnade, has already foaled two grass winners. I’ll play Stella Rose to win at 6- 1 or greater and will use her with SHE DOESN’T MIND (9) and GIOIA STELLA (8) Race 9, Lynnbrook Stakes The Play – (1) ZENNA (5-1 morning line, 6-1 value line) PAZ THE BOURBON (4) and WILBURNMONEY (6) are the horses to beat, but I’ll take a small stab with Zenna, who should show good speed from the rail and might control the pace from the get-go. Although no match for Wilburnmoney last time out, she did a lot of work prompting the pace of a second choice that ended up nowhere, and was still fighting it out in the stretch. Zenna has shown a tendency to be awkward from the gate and she can’t afford a misstep from the inside post. I’ll play her lightly to win at 6-1 or better and will use her with the two aforementioned contenders. In some other races: TABLE FOR SIX (#5, Race 7) looks strong in a state-bred allowance race to kick off the late pick four. She was forced to go four wide on the final turn in her first start for trainer Ralph Nicks, yet only lost by a nose. She adds blinkers for this and I’ll lean on her in the pick four with Kitty Maddnes (8) and Baronet (9) as the backups. CHANG’S SECRET (#5, Race 6) isn’t the most dependable horse in the world, but he was forced to move early in his most recent effort at Monmouth Park. He’s probably best played on the bottom of exotics, but deserves some win consideration and can be used with FOREVER IN LOVE (1) and FEARTHEFALCON (6) Best of luck!
