We're fast and firm to kick off the Sunday Saratoga card, but there is a forecast for rain in the afternoon that might impact some turf racing as well as the featured Amsterdam Stakes.   Here are some horses of interest on the program: Race 1: I usually prefer experienced horses to first-time starters and will stick with that theory in the opener.  MACHO BOY (2) has some precocity in his pedigree as he is out of an unraced half-sister to juvenile stakes-winning dirt sprinters Whirlin Curlin and Lexington Street. Trained by Gary Contessa, he showed some agility in his debut by slicing his way in between rivals to gain a contending spot entering the stretch. Spun wide into the lane, he finished with interest and looms a dangerous contender if able to show normal second-out improvement.  For more pedigree information on this race, please view the "Spa Babies" video, presented by Spendthrift Farm. Race 4: It's rare to see an Emerald Downs shipper at Saratoga, but New York-bred RUNNINWSCISSORS (5) fits this condition like a glove, will make his first start for high-percentage trainer Tom Amoss, and exits a live race. He was very conservatively ridden in that June 16 heat and was steadied several times while in between horses for the opening half-mile. Once clear, he was easily second-best behind the odds-on favorite (not only is Baja Sur undefeated in four starts, he has never been headed) while finishing well-ahead of two next-out winners.  Runninwscissors has a versatile running style and can be keyed on top of better-priced options like KAZMANIA (1) and VENTUS (4). :: Take 20% off our entire store with code XMAS, offer ends Sunday at midnight ET Race 10: NIGHT OF ENGLAND (7) is returning from a long layoff in this 11-furlong heat, but Chad Brown's horses usually fire fresh, and this filly was good enough to place in the German Oaks last year. She was used hard in the middle stages of the Grade 3 Long Island Stakes in November, opened up a clear lead at the furlong marker, and just couldn't withstand the closers. This looks like a more comfortable spot from a class perspective and she has been working in company with a graded-class mare in Santa Monica. Expect Night of England to sit off the pace today and attempt to make one run. DYNA PASSER (3) is a logical alternative if the top pick needs a race. She has a classy, long-winded pedigree and appears to have a bright future.  Race 11: This will be the class test for SHANCELOT (12), who has yet to be headed in his short career. While he'll likely have to go faster early than ever before in order to secure the early lead, I'm fairly confident that he'll be up to that task. He'll probably be the one to catch swinging into the stretch and we'll find out how good he is following the Amsterdam. I think he is this good and will use him on top of other logical contenders as NITROUS (6) and HONEST MISCHIEF (5). If the rains do come, consider upgrading WENDELL FONG (7), who jumped up in a major way over a sloppy course two starts back.  Click here for video analysis of today's Amsterdam. Good luck this afternoon at the Spa!
